ICS celebrates Women’s Month with a Webinar on Women in Computing

In celebration of the National Women’s Month, the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) held a webinar on the 25th of March, 2024. The webinar entitled “Breaking Barriers: Women in Computing – Teaching, Research and Administration” was attended by undergraduate and graduate students, UPLB faculty and staff as well as guests from outside of UPLB.

Two speakers were invited for the event. The first speaker, Ms. Mary Kristene D. Clariño, LPT, MIS is the Assistant Principal for Junior High School of De La Salle University Integrated School – Laguna Campus. She graduated cum laude from the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) program of UPLB and is also a graduate of Master of Information Systems at UP Open University. The second speaker, Dr. Rachel Edita O. Roxas is a Professor from ICS, UPLB. She also graduated cum laude from the BSCS program of UPLB. She took her Ph.D. in Computer Science at the Australian National University and her Ph.D. in Education major in Educational Leadership and Management at De La Salle University.

Both speakers shared their own inspiring journey in Computing. The webinar not only focused on how to overcome challenges women face, but also highlighted the remarkable achievements, potential, and leadership of women in various aspects of Computing, including teaching, research, and administration. The attendees actively participated in the discussion and open forum after each speaker’s presentation. The webinar was successful in promoting diversity, empowerment, and advancement in the field of Computer Science. The video recording is available here.
